How to Pick your Future Career

August 3, 2023 /

As a teenager, it’s always awkward when someone asks you what you want to be when you grow up. This question can make you cringe! “What profession are you considering for your future?” It’s hard enough to navigate each new year of school, so it feels unfair that a 16 year-old would ALSO have time to figure out what you want to do for a life-long career.

We believe that one of the best ways to figure out what you want to do is through an internship. An internship is better than a typical high school job because you get paid more, and you get your foot in the door with a a real life company. Even more important, and internship has unique support and structure so that you don’t get overwhelmed at your new job. You get proper training with kids your age with our AZYF Academy. Once you are placed in a job, we give you an AZYF mentor. This is someone is supports you, answers your questions, and ultimately wants your internship to go well!

Finally, you have someone at your job who will guide you through each day and week. They understand that you are still in high school, but still they want you to be challenged. They will help you along the way!

Does this sound interesting? Check out some of our current and upcoming internships and find one that you like. If you have questions, contact us! Parents, if you are reading this, we have a whole section just for you!

Okay, now let’s get back to that big big question: What do you want to be when you grow up? Let the rest of this blog give you some clarity. You don’t have to pick a career now, but here’s a way to get your thoughts going.

1) What are Your Strengths and Weaknesses?

First, take a moment to think about your strengths. Consider your hard skills, which are specific and measurable abilities and knowledge that you have gained through education, training, or experience. A good way to start is by thinking about the subjects you excel in at school. Which classes come easy to you?

Additionally, you’ll want to consider other skills that don’t show up in the classroom. These are your soft skills, and will allow you to effectively communicate, collaborate, and adapt. You can ask yourself these questions:

  • Am I more introverted or outgoing?
  • Do I thrive in collaborative environments or enjoy working independently?
  • Am I more inclined towards hands-on tasks or do I prefer computer-based work?

Moreover, it’s equally important to acknowledge areas that may not come as easily to you. Be honest with yourself! Nobody can be good at everything. Some of the most successful people will tell you a long list of what they are bad at. So be honest! Identify your unique talents and acknowledge any weaknesses, as these insights will guide you toward potentially fulfilling career possibilities.

2) What are Promising Career Opportunities?

Next, explore the diverse range of promising careers and consider whether there’s a demand for your skills. After all, it’s essential to find a path that not only aligns with your capabilities but also presents viable opportunities. Seek careers where your talents can flourish and be valued!

3) What are Your Interests and Passions?

You should love your job! So write a list of things that interest you, things that you are passionate about. It’s okay to keep some of these interests as hobbies. They’re for nights and weekends. Other interests and passions can shape up to be a viable career. Here’s an example. Do you like to fix computers? Are you always being called by a parent or teacher to help them with software? Well those skills very quickly can become a career in Information Technology (also called IT.) You get the idea. Some interests are for fun, others can become a prosperous career. Balancing passion with practicality is key.

Summary: You’ve Got This!

Once you’ve addressed these questions, consider the necessary steps you’ll need to take to achieve your desired career. This may involve pursuing a college degree or gaining practical job experience first. An AZYouthforce internship is the perfect opportunity to gain firsthand insight into different career options and discern your preferences. Even better, your mentor will be there to assist you throughout the course of your internship! Finally, remember that this is a journey, and with patience and an open mind, you’ll find a career path that aligns with your strengths and passions. Good luck!
